(Bread), Sweets (& More!) to the Streets
Driving to Relieve Food Insecurity
Since 2017, PC! PDX volunteers have been picking up donated baked goods from Safeway on Barbur and delivering them to various orgs that distribute food to the hungry. We began with the First Saturday each month, taking bread and goodies to 13 Salmon Family Center and the Ronald McDonald House, and we expanded in 2020 to delivering to Blanchet House every Wednesday.
Today, our volunteers pick up and deliver bread, treats, produce, and more every Wednesday to Multnomah Safe Rest Village and Neighborhood House Food Pantry, and every First Saturday to Urban Gleaners.
Who Gets the Food?
Multnomah Safe Rest Village offers temporary, managed living for houseless Portlanders,18 years and older—a space to sleep, receive basic and necessary hygiene, and access case management and behavioral health services.
The Neighborhood House Free Food Market in SW Portland serves over 850 households per month and has distributed nearly a million pounds of food in the last year to more than 16,000 people.
With 1 in 5 Oregonians living with food insecurity, the nonprofit Urban Gleaners is a community gem! They redistribute 60,000 lbs of food each month to feed 4,000 people each week in school pantries, at farmers' markets, and through mobile pantries in low-income communities.
By picking up donated food from Safeway and delivering to these organizations, Positive Charge! PDX volunteers are helping to address the hunger crisis in our community!
