About the Project

Have you driven by the field next to the Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC) in SW Portland and wondered what's going on with the growing village of tiny homes there? When we learned about the project, our reaction was, "Wow! This is sooooo cool! We need to help with this great cause!" 

This great cause is Cascadia Clusters. Cascadia Clusters trains houseless Portlanders to build affordable, sustainable, and high quality transitional housing structures--whereby empowering the trainees to regain dignity, independence, and employability. The focus of Cascadia Clusters' work is building Tiny Homes On Wheels (THOWS) and other small-footprint structures with up-cycled materials. They do this work at their mobile construction site, called their Maker Village, on SW Capitol Highway near the MJCC. AND THEIR WORK CONTINUES--even during the Covid-19 crisis, as they are considered an essential business (providing shelter!). 

Here’s where we come in! 

Cascadia Clusters (CC) invites volunteer groups to support them in their work. So, twenty-four Positive Charge! PDX volunteers have the opportunity to help with some construction and painting jobs. Under expert Cascadia Clusters' supervision and guidance, volunteers may be ASSISTING WITH BUILDING NEEDS or PRIMING AND PAINTING MURALS on the “shield wall” that separates the MJCC field from the CC worksite. (ARTISTS, WE NEED YOU!) 

Covid-19 Protective Measures: Cascadia Clusters staff have instituted prudent practices to keep all volunteers safe. For example, only 24 volunteers will work, keeping the six-foot distance between us (except for people of the same household). Also, all staff and volunteers are required to wear a bandana or mask and their own work gloves while on site. Sanitized eye protection will be provided. Also, no sharing of food will be permitted on site.

The details:

  • Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP soon and let us know when you sign up which two-hour shift works best for you (10am-noon, noon-2pm, or both).
  • Ages 12+ welcome! Everyone under 18 y/o must be supervised by an adult.
  • What to wear: Work/hiking boots, hat, clothing that can get dirty/painted, face mask or bandana, and work gloves.
  • How to enter worksite: Enter slightly elevated driveway on far west side of field. Continue to back of field. Parking is available across the street but NOT in the MJCC parking lot; you might get towed. 
  • Portable outhouse on site.
  • No water on site; can bring in buckets of water or other methods for washing hands and brushes.

What to bring:

  • Snack/drink for yourself (No sharing of food!)
  • Sunscreen (hopeful thinking!)
  • Hand sanitizer 
  • Those painting shield wall, not a requirement, but, if you have any of the following (many of these items can be obtained through donations on Nextdoor, Facebook, Buy Nothing groups, etc.), please bring paint brushes, rollers, trays, buckets of water, exterior house paint (any color), ideas for designs on 3’x’5’ sections of plywood boards that can be seen 200’ from the street (e.g., symbols/icons/graphics representing kindness, love, compassion, peace, welcome, different languages, etc.).

This is an intergenerational event, open to ages 12 and above.  If you plan to bring any minors under 18 years of age, please register separately for each person, noting in the appropriate field that the individual is a minor. You will also need to print out, fill out, and bring along this Waiver for Your Child and/or this Waiver for Adults/You. Thank you for your kind attention to this requirement.

FINALLY, please see our Photo Authorization and Liability Release details for the event. You will be asked to agree to these terms and conditions when you RSVP. Thanks for helping us to take care of paperwork upfront, so we can spend every moment at the event getting our "positive charge"!  P.S. If you do NOT want to have your photo taken, please mention this to the PC! Angel in charge when you arrive so we can be sure to identify you. No pressure at all!
